Children often display this expression that is molded with their hands. What emotion or feeling do you think causes it?

Wow! Interesting twist. The whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts. Sadness, not by way genuine facial expression, but by genuine overall expression. Does that make sense? Is that right? It also reminds me, which was my first thought, of how children’s hands often go to cover their eyes (or in this case, squishing them closed) when there is something they don’t want to see. As adults, we clamp down on this reaction, and it sometimes comes out as quick facial touching…or so I’m told.
Lee Cockrell says:
Tough one. Seeking attention? That’s what it seems my kids are doing with that face. I notice that kids will hold other kids’ faces like that too.
VictorMarieHugo says:
Looks like frustration to me.
Karon says:
I may be completely off base on this one, but I think he is joking around and acting funny. When I was scanning down to see the whole face, I thought it was complete frustration, but when I saw the whole face, I thought there was happiness in his face. I don’t remember ever seeing a child do his face this way.
Joan says:
I agree. I think he’s either mimicking someone (grandpa?) or making a funny face.
When a child does this it is most often a result of frustration. There may be other sources, but frustration is the most commonly seen. It’s almost like a visceral “I wanna scratch my eyes out” response!
Karon says:
I have not ever pulled at my face, but I have to admit that some people and circumstances makes me want to pull my hair. LOL. I have not ever pulled my hair, but I have the impulse every now and then.
clownfish says:
I agree that frustration is a component. He is doing a deep self-stroke on the face, that is usually to self-soothe.

I don’t see it personally but that doesn’t mean you might not be correct.
