Urbach–Wiethe disease: Feel No Fear

Portrait of a man

You all imagine living in a world where one can spot lies, but have you ever thought about living in a world without fear?  That’s the world that  a 44-year old woman who scientists are studying lives in.  She has a rare condition called Urbach–Wiethe disease in which scientists believe has destroyed her amygdala, the brain structure that is responsible for storing emotional memories.

Researchers have tried to scare this woman without success and even more interesting is that she cannot register the emotion of fear in other people.  She has unfortunately paid for that as she has been held up by knife point, accosted twice and nearly killed in a domestic violence.

While it may sound good for those of us who do feel fear, it definitely has consequences to not feel fear.

Horrifying 911 Call: Mother Talks of Killing Kids

A mother describes to the 911 operator how she killed her two kids, and how she wants “normal” children instead. She says it matter-of-factly without any emotion whatsoever. It is beyond chilling to hear someone who has no ability to feel normal emotions, talk about something so horrific. Those poor children. I can’t even fathom it. I don’t want to.

I warn you this call is hard to listen to.
