Amanda Knox: Decision Day this Week

Amanda Knox’s appeal will be decided this week–possibly as early as today.  Will Amanda be set free?  It sure looks that way when we listen to the American news media report on this story.  Not being fluent in Italian, I have no idea how things look from their perspective.

This case has taken many twists and turns over the past few years–the biggest of which is the fact that the Italian police bungled their investigation at the crime scene and have been very unreliable in getting information to substantiate people’s involvement–most specifically Amanda Knox and her boy friend, Raffaele Sollecito.

Many people are curious about what I think so I thought I would write an update.  When Amanda first gave the police her story, I immediately called out that I did not trust what she said to be true.

Back in November, 2007, Amanda Knox told police, “Patrick and Meredith were in Meredith’s room while I stayed in the kitchen. I can’t remember how long they were together in the room, but I can only say that at a certain point I heard Meredith screaming and I was scared so I covered my ears. After that, I don’t remember everything, my head is very confused.”

Which in response to the comment above, I wrote, “Several papers have printed a statement made by Knox to police, and if this statement is true, I find it quite interesting and telling that perhaps Ms. Knox is not being forthright with us….”  I conclude after giving my analysis, “…a strong indication of deception. I don’t believe Knox is being honest with us ” You can read my original thoughts and analysis of Amanda Knox statement here (from 2007).

Amanda has since retracted that statement (I need to mark this on my track record as another deception called out before the truth was known — I never did!), but she has yet to give us anything viable to hang our hat on. In all of these years, she has yet to make one statement that clearly delineates what she knows is true.  That troubles me.

48 Hours obtained the tape of Amanda describing to an Italian judge what happened to her that night which I believe was recorded in 2008 at Rudy Guede’s trial.  Amanda asked to address the court. It was the one time where she wasn’t translating between Italian and English and where she spoke freely about what she knew that night. Amanda had an entire year to gather her thoughts at this point, too, so I expected something substantial from Amanda, but what she said was anything but substantial.

Not only did Amanda NOT give us a clear memory of what happened that night that supports the truth, she hesitated a lot, self-censored her speech tremendously and stops herself from saying complete thoughts over and over again–which are more strong indicators of deception.

From all we know about this case up to today, I find it very strange that Amanda’s first confession involves her being at the house, with Meredith in her room with a black man. What are the odds that Amanda would make up a story that comes so close to what we do know the Italian police supposedly got right — that Rudy Guede’s, a black man, had his DNA everywhere in Meredith’s room?

The odds of this happening by coincidence are exceptionally rare. While it wasn’t Patrick Lumumba who killed Meredith as Amanda first said, I don’t think many people question that Rudy was there.  It points to the fact Amanda likely has more knowledge about what happened that night than what she is willing to admit.

I also find Amanda’s original statement troubling when she said she heard screams and covered her ears.  No one who hears screams, without knowing the source, would cover them up (end of story)!!  They would run to the source to see if someone accidentally hurt themselves, or they would flee if they felt they were in danger.  At which point Amanda conveniently had no memory.

For Amanda to make this element up that she didn’t know the cause of the scream, but just stood there and covered her ears is ILLOGICAL and nuts because she would have to think illogical when she made up that lie, if she didn’t experience this–and that is ridiculous (and very, very unique!!).  To me, it supports that fact that she was at the house, she did hear screams, BUT SHE KNEW who and possibly what was going on in the bedroom for her not to react. Add to that, she tells us in her first confession, it was a black man — and low and behold another black man was implicated in the murder. That’s pretty substantial for me.

So while Amanda lied in her first statement to police, I believe the truth is scattered in the middle of it and if we pay attention to her words, I believe it does reveal that Amanda had some knowledge of what happened that night.

Was she involved beyond that?  I CANNOT SAY and never have…I don’t have good enough interviews of Amanda to tell you.  Maybe that will change if she gets set free.

I also believe that Amanda was involved in drugs and may have a foggy memory that night as well–which causes her absolutely weird ramblings that make no sense whatsoever.  I suspect she thinks back to that night, has weird dream-like visions of what happened and doesn’t dare share them because they certainly wouldn’t help her case…

Amanda Knox Appeal Underway

Amanda Knox’s appeal for freedom started in an Italian court last week. Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted in the murder of Meredith Kercher, an English student studying abroad in Italty.  Knox and Kercher were roommates.  Knox’s sentence was 26 years and Sollecito’s sentence was 25.  Both hope their appeals will bring freedom.

I’ve always felt Amanda knew more than she was telling, but that is all I know.  I don’t know that she was directly involved in the death of Meredith Kercher. She has spoken very little to the public on this case.

Amanda’s appeal is set to get underway on December 11.   Interestingly, if you notice Raffaele and Amanda seem to be sporting the same hair style.  Is this just coincidence?  Or is there more to this?  I find it rather freakish, whether it is coincidence or not!  If I was Amanda, I would have been mortified.

True Justice.org has an interesting photo of Amanda Knox in court during the murder trial where it appears she is flirting with Raffaele Sollecito. It’s eerie. Check it out here

Thanks, Sally, for the photo link.

While I don’t know that Amanda is guilty of outright murder, I personally believe she had some knowledge or involvement on some level with this crime. Her behaviors were too out there and inconsistent to support complete innocence. Her story of covering her ears still haunts me to this day. People don’t create such incredible stories out of thin air that aren’t logical unless they are twisting reality. You don’t cover your ears when you hear a blood-curdling scream unless you know what is going on, but don’t want to stop it, or can’t stop it (to which she would have confessed). Also, the fact that she pointed a finger at Patrick Lumumba, an African, when in fact it was another African’s DNA that was all over the crime scene, is highly unusual for her do, unless she knew more as well.

What a sad day for everyone involved.

Amanda Knox’s Trial Started Today

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito’s murder trial for Meredith Kercher began today in a Perugia courtroom. New reports are saying that the media has descended upon the beautiful, picturesque town in droves to cover a trial that could last for up to a year.

I read the news and found some interesting tidbits. I never knew that Knox had been arrested before. Did you?

[BBC.com] Reporters descended on Amanda’s home city of Seattle in search of more details of her private life.

They discovered that the Washington University student had been arrested and fined in 2007 for her role in a drunken party that police were called to.

A picture began to be painted of a “party girl” who abused drink and drugs and had an active sex life.

The Guardian.co.uk displays a photo of Knox in the courtroom earlier today, and I find that photo as well as the one of Knox with Sollecito the day of Kercher’s body discovery fascinating.

If you were facing trial for murder, for a murder you did not commit, and it was the first day you appeared in court as the world peered on with countless reporters all glaring at you, would you be relaxed and comfortable enough to smile casually? Knox’s face in this photo looks notably relaxed to me.

[Guardian.co.uk] A smiling Amanda Knox walked into a frescoed underground Italian courtroom this morning at the start of her trial for the murder of her British fellow-student Meredith Kercher.

Dressed in jeans, a grey, black and white striped top and grey hooded tracksuit jacket, she chatted in a seemingly relaxed way with her lawyers.

Is Knox that naive to believe she will walk free without a worry? Her character, her behavior and her actions to date certainly don’t support she is a person who is naive. She certainly didn’t live a sheltered existance — especially after spending a year in a foreign prison.

Why doesn’t she have an ounce of worry? Most innocent people in her shoes would be shaking in their boots, panicked, worried, or fearful of what the outcome will be. Is Knox arrogant enough to think she will get off without a hitch, is she that emotionally detached, or self-delusional? This photo begs us to ask why.

Also, the day that Meredith Kercher’s body was found, I found Knox’s behavior interesting as well. If you are completely innocent and uninvolved in the murder of your flatmate, wouldn’t you be rattled to the core that a murderer came within footsteps of where you co-habitated?

Wouldn’t you feel fear that this murderer is still lurking out there that morning when the body was found, and that they could still be watching you? Wouldn’t you fear that you could be the next victim?

Yet when we watch Knox and Sollecito kiss and interact that day, we see none of these emotions. It’s absolutely perplexing! They seem to have no fear, which is very abnormal. There seems to be no stress in their faces whatsoever. Did they know they didn’t have to worry?

Ever since I heard that Knox said that she was in the flat that night [my post November 9, 2007], and that she heard a scream, but was scared so she covered her ears, my alarm bells went off on high.

No one hears a blood curdling scream, and doesn’t know the source, but covers their ears. As humans, when we hear a threatening noise, albeit a scream, a loud bang or thud, we don’t just decide to cover our ears without knowing what is going on. Our natural, biological response is to investigate the noise. It’s a protective measure we all have within us, an instinct for survival, because that noise could ultimately be warning that we, too, are in danger.

We only cover our ears when we know what is going on, but don’t want to listen to the wretched noise before us. This statement shows that Amanda had some awareness of what was going on when Kercher screamed. To me, that is bone-chilling. I don’t think Knox lied about this bit of information. I suspect she was there and she did hear a scream, and perhaps she did cover her ears, but I believe she knew what was going on. It’s too strange of a lie to come up with if she wasn’t there or wasn’t in some way involved. She just changed the details, and those details give her away.

Do I think Knox killed Kercher? I have no clue, but I do see enough that makes me question that Knox has not been honest with us, and at a minimum she didn’t help a roommate who she knew was being violated in one form or another. Instead, it appears from what she says, she stood by and listened, and turned her cold back to a person in desperate need of help.
